The Role of Summer Assistant Bosun
The purpose of this role is to assist the two Club bosuns during the busy summer season. It would suit a Club youth sailor wanting a summer job between completing A levels and going up to university.
Period of Employment
The period of employment is from now until an agreed date in September 2025 (i.e. ideally for about 3 months).
Reporting
Working with and reporting to the Senior Bosun, working with the boats bosun. The employing officer is Rear Commodore House although Rear Commodore Sailing will also provide direction.
General person requirements
- Candidates of all ages above 16 years will be considered although the role is best suited to a school leaver aged 18 or above. Candidates aged under 18 may be more limited (e.g. by insurance requirements for suitable experience) in the tasks that they can undertake (e.g. boat fuelling operations).
- As this is a short-term role with limited familiarisation time, prior knowledge of WSC and how it operates is important.
- Familiar with being afloat on boats, an interest and ability in sailing would be good.
- A practical nature, able to carry our DIY jobs on buildings, facilities and boats with suitable training and supervision provided.
- Physically fit to assist in the moving of boats, road trailers, equipment and building materials.
- Adaptable to dynamically changing work objectives as events change and defects occur.
- A self-starter, able to work at times unsupervised and identify problems to be resolved.
- Able to understand and implement Club Health and Safety policies and Risk Assessments.
- A team player, able work constructively with Club staff and members.
- Able to assist members using facilities, explain operating limitations and deal courteously with members queries.
- A PB2 qualification would be useful.
- A full Driving Licence would be useful.
Roles and responsibilities
The tasks below are an indication of the roles that would be expected to be undertaken but are not an extensive list as other duties may arise during Club operations.
- To assist the Bosuns maintain Club buildings, facilities and boats.
- To assist the Bosuns to prepare for Club sailing (including racing and training) and social events. This includes working in the bars and beer cellar (supervised if aged under 18 years).
- To assist the Bosuns keep the Club buildings and facilities clean and tidy.
- To assist the bosuns prepare Club boats for use and equipment for club racing.
- When suitably experienced to stand in for a Club bosun when absent on annual leave etc.
Conditions of employment
The general conditions of employment are:
- The role will be for a maximum of 40 hours per week (as agreed at interview), with a maximum of 8 hours worked per day, reasonable unpaid time off will be granted. Occasional weekend working will be required with time off in lieu.
- Working hours will be expected to conform to that of the bosuns although there is some flexibility subject to day to-day agreement with the senior bosun.
- Salery will be the relevant statutory minimum wage for the hours worked (see below) but overtime will not be paid.
- Should the successful candidate be aged under 22 years, then auto enrolment in the Club’s pension scheme would not apply. However, such a candidate may request that they be enrolled and make the necessary employee contributions.
- There will be a written employment contract and the WSC Employee’s handbook will apply to this role, although statutory and not contractual sick pay will apply.
- Personal safety equipment is to be worn whenever working afloat or on Jetties, this will be provided by WSC.
- Drinking alcohol is not permitted during the working day (i.e. including during unpaid lunch breaks).
- As a temporary role, 1 weeks’ notice will be applied either side.
- There will be a two-week probationary period.
- If the successful candidate is a Club member, then membership of WSC would be administratively removed for the period of working at WSC, however the position has full access to all Club facilities.
Rates of Pay
The national minimum wage rates are applicable, these are:
- Aged 16 to 17: £7.55 per hour;
- Aged 21 and over: £12.21 per hour;
- Aged 18 to 20: £10.00 per hour;
